Vivian Redlich was the son of Revd Basil Redlich who was Vicar of St Nichlas Church from 1925 to 1954. He went as a missionary to Papua New Guinea where in 1942 he met his death. He was celebrated as a modern Christan martyr who died for his faith and he has been upholded as an example of someone who died for his Christian beliefs to many. St Nicholas church has a side chapel dedicated to his memory and a memorial plaque remembers him also. The chapel contains a scroll from the Bishop of Japan apologising for this death at the hands of Japanese soldiers. However, recent information which has come to light, has revealed that it was not the Japanese soldiers who killed Vivian but members of the Orokaiva tribe with whom Vivian and the thirteen others in the missionary group had taken shelter. Bishop Barnabas, from Japan, was a priest in Yokohama at the time the sroll of apology was sent. He has stated that although the Japanese understood that that they were not responsible directly for Vivian's death they did create the circustances which lead towards his death and thus the scroll can remain in St Nicholas church along with the new information which has come to light. A booklet, 'Vivian Redlich, A Modern Martyr', containing further details of his life, available from the church bookstall will also be amended to reflect this new information. |
