Opening Doors

St Nicholas Church Extension Project

2008

January

Work on site recommenced soon after the Christmas and New Year holidays and has progressed well with several trades working both outside and inside the new building.

Stone work to the gable end wall has been completed and we can now see some of the features included in the design.

The combination of two different types of stone and the irregular features have produced a beautifully textured and coloured finish.

The slate work to the roof is complete and the stone copings to both the roof and the gable end look impressive and with weathering should blend well with the top of the bell tower.

Work inside has progressed well. First fix plumbing and electrical work is completed.

The internal walls are in place and the beautiful oak staircase is installed and covered in bubble wrap to avoid possible damage.

The under floor heating pipes have been installed in the new building, the floor laid, and the heating system in church has been modified to link up to the new boiler. The whole system has been successfully pressure tested.

For many there was a surprise in church when the wooden panelling on the back wall was removed. This allowed some of the heating pipes at the back of church to be re-routed and one radiator relocated.

The organ pipes will remain covered for protection until the dusty work is complete. We thank you for your patience and understanding during this short period of disruption until the new entrance is created and the two buildings become one.

February 2008

The scaffold has been removed and pointing of the stonework completed.

Plastering inside ceilings and walls has commenced.

Outside work to drains and services has commenced.

Windows and doors are being installed.

What happens next?

Before the end of February the new entrance into church should be in place, and the heating switched on, Praise God!

Working groups have been set up by the church council to consider final fixtures and fittings and make preparation of the opening ceremony.
